Origin of rum punch

Surprisingly, rum does not originate in the tropics, Hawaii or Martinique, but in India.

The word punch comes from ‘panch’ which means 5, like the five ingredients in its original recipe. It consisted of a mixture of tafia (the ancestor of rum), sugar, fruit juice, cinnamon and tea. Tafia was a type of unrefined rum that was extremely strong in alcohol.

It was almost undrinkable, especially when it was time to go to sea. Between the alcohol and the heavy swell, the crew had a hard time! British sailors had the ingenious idea of mixing it with all sorts of exotic fruits they found in their Indian colonies.

The recipe transformed into a delicious, fruity beverage, but the name remained the same.

 

What type of rum is perfect for a delicious punch?

When it comes to making a delicious punch, in general you can choose between two types of rum. Either amber or white rum.

White rum is usually the preferred choice for punch. You could, for example, use our BANQERO Silver white rum. It is more vegetal and floral than amber rum, which is more full-bodied and therefore subtly reveals the flavours of the other ingredients you add. Also, it goes well with almost any fruit juice.

Amber rum that has been aged in casks has more structure and power and is therefore more present in the mouth. It brings more typical and woody notes to your punch. It is perfect with tangy fruit juices such as lemon, orange or pineapple.

Whether white or amber, it’s up to you to choose the one you like for your punch.

Ingredients

The ingredients are very easy to source. A trip to the grocery shop or your supermarket will do the trick. So here are the ingredients you need to make a killer rum punch.

 

For 8 guests you will need:

  • A large bowl and a ladle to serve your guests
  • 1 L of white or amber rum
  • 1 L of orange juice
  • 1 L of pineapple juice or 1 L of mango juice
  • 1/2 L pink grapefruit juice or the juice of 2 limes or lemons to taste
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder or 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 or 2 turns of ground pepper
  • 50 cl of cane sugar syrup
  • Fruit of your choice (apple, pineapple, strawberries, mango, red fruit, etc.) and some fresh sprigs of mint.

If you like, you can add vanilla to your punch:

  • 1 vanilla pod
  • 4 tablespoons of vanilla extract

Preparation steps

The rum punch is very easy to make and only takes a few minutes.

  1. First, mix all the liquids in a sufficiently large container.
  2. Then add the spices.
  3. Clean the fruit and cut into small cubes. Then add them to your mixture.
  4. Feel free to give it a taste and adjust the mixture before leaving to chill for at least 8 hours. Add a few ice cubes and some crumpled fresh mint before serving.
